Angel backed PBD Biotech wins Royal Dairy Innovation Award 2019

Angel-backed company PBD Biotech has had its novel Actiphage® testing technology named as the winner of the Royal Dairy Innovation Award at Dairy-Tech 2019.

The Royal Dairy Innovation trophy and certificate are awarded for research and development in the field of dairy farming. With the award going to the most practical, relevant product, which is likely to be the most significant innovation for the future of dairying.

Acceleris-backed Redag sale generates return for angels

Acceleris Capital investment Redag Crop Protection Ltd, a UK agrochemical discovery company, has sold its discovery and early development division to Globachem NV, retaining the lead assets for continued development to commercialisation.

With this new acquisition, Globachem continues its already fast-growing development. Globachem Discovery Ltd, the new name of the acquired company, will enhance and strengthen Globachem Group capabilities in Research and Development.

The partial sale will allow Redag to focus on the development of the two lead assets, a broad spectrum herbicide and a potato blight fungicide with a view to licensing them once further field trials and data packages have been created.

HBAN to sign up 75 new angels in 2019

HBAN plans to recruit 75 new business angels in 2019. The new investors will have a combined total of at least €15 million available to invest in start-ups based in the island of Ireland.

The recruitment drive will begin at HBAN’s All-Island Business Angels Conference which takes place on Thursday, 14th February, in Powerscourt Hotel, Co. Wicklow. This year’s conference will focus on diversity and how a varied investment portfolio yields better returns for angel investors. A number of prominent Irish and international entrepreneurs and angel investors will be speaking at the event.

Hexafly secures €1.1 million

HBAN (Halo Business Angel Network), the all-island organisation responsible for the promotion of business angel investment, and an initiative of Enterprise Ireland, InterTradeIreland and Invest Northern Ireland, has announced agritech company, Hexafly has secured a total of €2.2m after closing a recent round of €1.1m. The total investment includes €900,000 in angel funding, with Enterprise Ireland, SOS Ventures, Yield Lab and Cedas Foundation making up the rest of the two rounds. It is the largest HBAN angel investment in agritech to date and will help to fund 50 new jobs over the next two years, as well as a new larger production facility.

Startup Funding Club (SFC) has recently closed an investment into state-of-the-art eBike company Swytch Technology in an SFC-lead round of £800,000 coming from various entities as well as private investors. The funded company produces and sells eBike kits that convert existing bikes into electric power-assisted ones.

Superfood Bakery raises £240k from investor including Henley Business Angels

Superfood Bakery, a company that makes delicious gluten-free dairy-free baking mixes and snacks sold at over 100 retailers, have closed their £240k round that includes investment from one member of Henley Business Angels.

Superfood Bakery sell at several prominent chains, including selected Boots, Ocado, Selfridges, Planet Organic, Revital and Gousto. The company’s goal is to help consumers improve their food habits by producing delicious, naturally gluten-free, nutritionally superior and free from refined sugar alternatives to the traditional baked goods.

Lein Applied Diagnostics, a company that specialises in innovative and precise optical technology, have closed their latest funding round, receiving investment from two members of Henley Business Angels. This is the second time that Lein have gone through Henley Business Angels for funding, having previously raised a total of £440,000 back in 2017.
