Scottish dental tech firm prepares to take on fight against tooth decay

As dentists worldwide begin to tackle the backlog of patients whose tooth decay may have worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic*, Edinburgh-based dental technology company, Calcivis, is preparing for a US launch with a restructuring of its board and the successful completion of its latest funding round.  Calcivis has developed the world’s first biotechnology-based dental imaging system and has been part of the portfolio of the Scottish business angel investment syndicate, Archangels, since 2012.

Burda invests £16m in sustainable food platform Oddbox

BurdaPrincipal Investments (BPI), the growth capital arm of media and tech company Hubert Burda Media, has invested in UK-based Oddbox, a platform that is leveraging technology to fight food waste. BPI has invested a total of £16m, comprising a combination of primary and secondary investment.

The news, as reported in The Times on 24th August, that US VC investment in the UK hit £4.5bn in 2020 is significant.  That is more than the EIS Scheme and The Future Fund combined.  A sign of the great opportunities for investors certainly and a welcome sharing of the load required to spin UK companies into unicorns, of course.  But how does this inform angels about the nature of what they do?
