Student Entrepreneurs are faster to commercialise their inventions

Student entrepreneurs and faculty entrepreneurs engage in different strategic behaviour in commercialising their inventions according to a new research from the UCL School of Management.

In a new National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) working paper, Assistant Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship Kenny Ching and his and co-authors found thdent entrepreneurs are less likely to patent their ideas or protect their innovations compared to faculty entrepreneurs.

New CBI analysis of data published by the Office for National Statistics has found that businesses paid £186 billion in taxes in 2017/18. The total business tax contribution amounts to 27% of all tax revenue.

Equity versus Rewards Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding has gone beyond the early adopter stage, meaning most people have now heard of it. A recent survey by TribeFirst suggests that we are getting close to the stage where more people in the UK have supported a crowdfunding campaign than haven’t. The survey, completed by 250 people, showed that 43.8% of the respondents had backed either a charity, rewards or equity crowdfunding campaign.

Mercia awarded £27m North East Venture Fund

Mercia Fund Managers has announced that it has been awarded the £27 million Venture Fund to support businesses across the North East region as part of the £120.0million North East Fund, supported by The European Regional Development Fund.

This follows a succession of contract wins for Mercia amounting to in excess of £200 million, which includes the recent award of a £23 million Proof-of-Concept and Early Stage Equity Fund, part of the Midlands Engine Investment Fund, £108 million of the British Business Bank’s Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund, the first closing of EV Growth II with initial commitments totalling £45.1million and £11.8million in Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) capital.

AIC expands investment company universe

The Association of Investment Companies (AIC) has expanded its universe of investment companies. From 31 March 2018, non-AIC member UK Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) which are funds and non-AIC member investment companies listed on the Specialist Fund Segment (SFS) of the London Stock Exchange have been added to the AIC’s universe.
