Global Data from Angel Investment Network reveals Technology remains the top sector for investors looking to back startups, up 23% year on year and there is growing opportunity for FinTech entrepreneurs, more investors looking to back fintech businesses.

There has been a significant rise in the numbers of angel investors looking to back startups across the globe with technology the most popular sector and food and beverage seeing the fastest year on year growth. These are some of the key findings from Angel Investment Network’s annual analysis of the global state of angel investment funding based on data from their platform. 

Wastewater treatment and bioenergy company, WASE, has raised £400,000, to be followed by a further £300,000, following closure of the oversubscribed Seedrs campaign. The funding was led by Elbow Beach Capital, the decarbonisation, sustainability and social impact investor, with support from the Science Angel Syndicate, and the European Union’s Climate-KIC’s investment support programme Found by Us, Funded by You, WASE has raised over £1 million.

We spoke to founder and Gabriel Investments CEO Gill MacAulay to find out more about the syndicate and the companies they back, and to get her views on the future of angel investing in the region.

Award-winning hybrid studio and digital fitness platform BLOK has  secured £3.75m in a funding round led by ACF Investors, with additional investment from Elcot  Capital and The Santon Group. The funding round also included investment from the UK  government’s Future Fund, Crowdcube and angel investor Rob Wirszycz, who will be joining the  business as Chairman.

Business angels and super angels from across Europe will attend the European Business Angels Network (EBAN) Congress with the aim of increasing annual angel investment in Europe from €8BN to €10BN by 2025.
